Introducing The LutheranHANDS Foundation!
December 18, 2011
I am pleased to announce that effective January 1, 2012, LutheranHANDS will be incorporated in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as The LutheranHANDS Foundation. This is an important milestone in our plans to grow the ministry, provide more opportunities for volunteers, and to support more communities in need.
As an entity seperated from the Lower Susquehanna Synod and ELCA, we will be able to offer annual mission trips and local service opportunities to youth and young adults with greater flexibility. The main difference is that we will be able to operate fiscally unconstrained as we seek out to raise funding, own property and assets, and have an independant tax liability to the federal government. Another difference is that we will be able to define our own corporate governance principles and policies, including - a Board of Directors which the management team will report to, an independent Advisory Council which will assess the alignment of the LutheranHANDS strategy and the needs of the Lutheran church, and a Board of Trustees to manage an Endowment Fund designed to provide financial stability and a source of growth capital to take our vision to all new heights.
We are not yet a 501(c)3 nonprofit organziation, however, we have begun the filing process with the IRS and expect to achieve this status by June 2012. This process is typically long and we were unable to begin prior to our incorporation. Acceptance of our filing and approval of The LutheranHANDS Foundation as a 501(c)3 nonprofit will be the next major milestone in the life of LutheranHANDS which started as 11 young adults on their way to the Gulf Coast to help rebuild from Hurricane Katrina.
The future is uncertain yet exciting as The LutheranHANDS Foundation continues to listen to God as it defines it's strategy and looks for more opportunities to help others in need. Please be patient with us in 2012 as it is our year "Under Construction" and prayerfully consider this invitation for you to get involved in The LutheranHANDS Foundation in whatever way God is calling you to serve.
